On this week’s This American Life, Ira Glass* interviews Jason Pittman, a science teacher who was preparing to leave his position after 10 years of awesome, award-winning teaching in the DC area.  He taught in a program which lost funding several years ago, and since then, he’s had to hustle to raise the money to keep his job by attending school board meetings and soliciting local businesses. The teaser for the interview focuses on the financial aspect of Jason’s situation:

Coming up, how to be one of the very best in the country at what you do, and still not make more money from your boss than you did a decade ago.

I wouldn’t deny that this is galling.  Over that decade, the cost of housing and just about everything else has crept (or skyrocketed) up, so Jason is likely to be in a more precarious situation…
